Mr. Smith ‘MVP’ Returns To Super Bowl

(1090 The Fan) – Since the first Super Bowl was held in 1967, the Most Valuable Player Award has been given to 43 players, just eight of them from the defense. After a decade of MVP trophies going to quarterbacks and wide receivers, Seattle linebacker Malcolm Smith was the unexpected recipient last year.

Filling in for injured teammate K.J. Wright, Smith grabbed the lime light with four interceptions in the last five games of the 2013 season.  That included his game saving pick off Richard Sherman’s tip in the NFC Championship win over San Francisco.

In Seattle’s 43-8 romp over Denver in the NFL title game, Smith recovered a Demaryius Thomas fumble, and intercepted Peyton Manning for a 69-yard touchdown.  The MVP trophy could have gone to any number of Seahawks’ defensive players for the dominating performance, but Smith received the most votes from attending media.

Before practice this week, the soft-spoken Smith reflected on that spectacular moment in his four year professional football career.

“It’s not too distant a memory because it happened just a year ago,” said Smith. “It’s not a point of focus for me at all during this process.  It’s a great memory, but we’re trying to do something even bigger than that.”

With the Most Valuable Player honor came a trip to Disney World. There were a few television appearances. Otherwise it was just a typical spring in his home town of Northridge, California.

One thing Smith will try to duplicate is his preparation for the Super Bowl.

“I should, it worked well last time,” chuckled Smith.  “We’re fortunate to have two weeks to prepare in this situation.  You have extra time to tune in to the details, some things you might not see in one week.

We’ll have a week in Arizona away from families, and look at film as a group, and grow on things we’ve already established.”

Offseason ankle surgery slowed the USC alum during summer training camp. He has played in 16 of Seattle’s 18 games, started at outside linebacker in five of those contests, and been a major contributor on special teams units.

Smith and the entire Seattle linebacker group should be plenty busy against the New England Patriots’ potent offense.

“Brady’s going to get the ball out quick, assess what he sees, and make decisions fast, so we just have to get our feet on the ground and be ready to play,” said Smith.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is listed as 8/5 favorite on the odds to win the Super Bowl XLIX MVP, and the Seahawks QB Russell Wilson is second at 7/2 odds. Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch is the best odds for a non-quarterback at 4/1.  Cornerbacks Darrelle Revis (New England) and Richard Sherman (Seattle), as well as Hawks’ safety Kam Chancellor are 33/1 to win Most Valuable Player.
